According to The Pasadena Star-News, as preliminary crime statistics shows that the number of bicycle thefts went up in 2011. In the area patrolled by the sheriff's Norwalk Station, bicycle thefts jumped from 48 in 2010 to 81 in 2011.
In Pasadena, thieves steal one bike a day, according to statistics from the police department. Also, shop owners said thefts have skyrocketed the last few years. "It's crazy," said Velo Pasadena owner Hrach Gevrikyan. "It's way more now."
The staff at the Covina Valley Cyclery in Covina is seeing the same thing, said Russ Dicono, who works there as sales man/mechanic. "We have at least one person a month coming in and telling us their bike was stolen," he said.
Police and those in the bicycle industry suspect the increase could be caused by the "fixie" bicycle fad. In a movement that started about 12 years ago, teenagers are parting out bicycles and converting them into "fixies." The bicycles are difficult to ride.
"It's just a cool factor," said Luis Renteria, a member of the VFixII bicycle club. "No matter how anybody tries to break it down, it was just something cool." Police said they would have a much easier time returning stolen bikes if owners would write down the serial number. "Ninety-nine percent of the time, people don't write down the serial number," Pasadena Police Lt. Tom Delgado said.
